Millions of people visit the Lake District every year but how many of them know about the industries and what life was like in this beautiful part of north west England many decades ago. Well you can find out by watching the films in the Gallery. There will be regular additions to this section in the future.

Some of the early steamboats feature in this sequence of photographs. We also see some of the early holidaymakers way before the days of cheap flights to the sun. The village of Mardale is included before it disappeared for ever.

We look at a more tranquil time in the lake district before it became so crowded in the summer months. This sequence ends with some film of the long hot summer of 1976.

Let’s join the early tourists as they travel around in their charabancs or take a pleasant steamer cruise around Windermere. It just shows how times have changed. We can see the price of a cruise is just two shillings. That’s today’s equivalent of ten pence.

In this short film there is the story of Sir Henry Seagrave, a forerunner of Donald Campbell who smashed the world water speed record but with a disastrous ending. There are also rare pictures of the early ferries across Windermere and atmospheric shots of Ambleside decades ago.
