COCKERMOUTH
Many West Cumbrian communities have been bonded together by the sea and the mines but Cockermouth developed in a very different way. It was a textiles area because it had an ample water supply. In the mid nineteenth century there were over forty industrial sites which included woollen and cotton mills, hat factories and tanneries. We have a lovely mixture of atmospheric photographs of street scenes in the town over the decades.
