We head straight back to the 1960s and Carlisle market hall in the first segment of this film. It’s the day that the Prime Minister of the day, Harold Wilson comes to address the crowd. Then there’s a nostalgic look at the heyday of the Lonsdale cinema that has now been demolished. Archive of two popular city pubs are also featured in this segment.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh’s visit to Carlisle is a major feature in part two of Timeslip. The crowds were out to welcome Her Majesty who came to the city to hand out Maundy money in 1978. We also have archive film of the Central hotel on the Viaduct in its heyday before it was demolished in 2020. And we are at Carlisle fire station in 1958 captured on some wonderful colour cine film.

Thousands of people remember The Palace cinema in Botchergate. Part three of Timeslip is devoted to some great film of The Palace many decades ago. It was first built as a music hall in 1906 but closed altogether in the 1980s. You will be transported back to the days when this elegant building was attracting hundreds of people every week.

There’s plenty to keep you interested down the time tunnel in this segment of Timeslip. We visit the old brewery in Caldewgate and some of the city pubs that have got a long history. Then we go down St. Alban’s Row in 1958 with some atmospheric colour film.

This section just concentrates on two buildings but they are or were two of the most iconic in the city. The first is Her Majesty’s Theatre in Lowther Street which was eventually demolished and we also have some classic film about the building of the civic centre.

The Sauceries is an area of open ground beneath Carlisle Castle. Over the years it has been the venue for numerous spectacular events. In this Timeslip we feature two of them. First, we go back to 1928 for highlights of the great Carlisle pageant. It was so successful this film was even shown to audiences in America. Then we move forward to the 1960s when the Household Cavalry were the stars of the Cumberland Show.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s Carlisle underwent a period of change and one of the most noticeable was the pedestrianisation of the city centre. It very much changed things for shoppers but the painstaking work took months to complete. Luckily the city council commissioned a film to be taken as the work was carried out and this has survived to provide a fascinating look at that period in Carlisle’s ever changing past.
